DIY Website Basic Must Haves When Getting Started

DIY website design… did I just give you the chills? I promise it’s easier than you think, and if you get stuck, I’m available to coach you through hick-ups.

Maybe you are a start-up or perhaps you have been earning your clients by word of mouth and dragging your feet on creating a website.  If you already have created a business website, you’ll likely still want to take the opportunity to learn more about how to optimize what you have.  

Regardless, having a website for your services, brand and message are absolutely imperative. Your clients want to know more about you before picking up that phone and this is where they are going to look for those trust signs before determining if you are worth their hard earned money and time.

DIY Website Branding

Brand Your Business and Website.  I should feel the same way walking into your office, shaking your hand or holding your finished products as I do when I land on your website. For example, if you are selling hand made bracelets on Etsy but you have a website template showing a sleek, white lobby… well, then I think I have gone to the wrong page.

  • Having a logo is a must. Even if it’s also a DIY made for free on Canva.
  • Use 2-3 colors and 2-3 fonts throughout your entire website and in any graphics for your blog posts.
  • Logo should be clearly displayed.
  • Social Media links should all be functioning and bring users to a social media business page with your logo.
  • Use the same header image as your other social media platforms. Consider using the main image from your websites home page.

DIY Website Technicals

  • Contact Us page should have your phone number and email clearly displayed, not just link to their Outlook. Don’t make your clients copy and paste or hunt you down.
  • Users should be able to click your phone number from their mobile device; do not use a static phone number that your clients have to write down to reach you.
  • Only use a responsive template. No exceptions.

DIY Website Design for Better Marketing

  • Use your blog functions to write often, as content marketing will increase your website SEO and decrease your advertising costs.
  • Ensure that each page and piece of information on your page has a reason.  Ask yourself why it’s there, will your users know why it’s there and if you cut out any unnecessary text.
  • Use call to actions!  Each page, article, etc. should have an easy way for your users to fulfill your goal for them being there. If you want leads, then put that “Learn More” or “Call for More Information” and “Join Our Email List” above the fold and again at the end of any article.  Don’t be afraid to throw one about a third of the way through any article.
  • Navigation – Don’t make your users have to click around three or four times to get to your message and call to action buttons.

DIY Website Layout and Graphics

  • Graphic size, and I don’t mean the physical space they take up on the page, but ensuring that you are not eating up your mobile users bandwidth to see your images.  Load time and bandwidth are dings against your SEO when Google decides to serve your article/website vs. your competition.
  • Use HD images.  I know I just said to watch the bandwidth, but there is a happy medium.  Don’t use fuzzy images or pixilated graphics. At least start with the good ones and trim up the pixle size. Go with 800x480px when in doubt. Again, you can resize easily on Canva.
  • Check out the vast amount of free information on Google Webmasters and start by implementing what you have heard here and their tools a little at a time will slowly optimize your website and you’ll be in a much stronger position in just a few months.
  • Ensure there is enough negative space to give your readers eyes a rest.

Finding a website developer can feel like shopping for a used car!

Call me sexist, but as a single women walking into a car dealership, I’m just expecting I’ll get a run around. Maybe times have changed, but I’ve only had one good experience (thank you Right Toyota in Scottsdale!) and finding a website developer is not that different. In a field dominated by men, and us gals being less tech inclined leaves us at a disadvantage when it comes to knowing who to hire.
